About Kanchanaburi and River Kwai from Bangkok

Kanchanaburi is a provincial town full of lots of painful history back in the time of World War II when Japanese forces torture Allied prisoners and labours to build a railway to Myanmar. This nightmare was told in Pierre Boulle’s book and also was filmed in The Bridge Over the River Kwai and the 1957 movies. Today, everything has changed, yet there are still memorials and museums in this town where we can see the old track of the event in the war, and many roads in the town center are named after many countries that were involved in the conflict. But, the town itself is crowded and alive surrounded by fields planted with tapioca, cane, corn, and sugar along Mae Klong River. You can take a bicycle or motorbike trip around the town to experience the wonderful sights of many attractions and you can feel joyful among local people living by Mae Nham Kwae (the river) or floating on it. Make an unforgettable trip in Kanchanaburi, just 130 Km away from Bangkok. You can go by car or by train as the central street is just 10 mins walk from the train station.

Worth a visit

Suppose to join in with other tourists, but ended only my family. We were transport in a mini van. Tour guide and driver was friendly, but duering return, the driver drove very fast with close tailgate, nearly crash with another car in the traffic junction. We were very gladsof the service and price for this tour, only spoilt by the speeding during return.

Very interesting

We did this trip from Bangkok stopping at the cemetery, museum and the bridge. We had a basic knowledge of the WW 2 history of the death railway.

If you are heading to Thailand and have a military bent then I strongly recommend that you take the time to travel to Kanchanaburi to visit the Bridge over the River Kwai, it is well worth it.
