We did this trip from Bangkok stopping at the cemetery, museum and the bridge. We had a basic knowledge of the WW 2 history of the death railway.

If you are heading to Thailand and have a military bent then I strongly recommend that you take the time to travel to Kanchanaburi to visit the Bridge over the River Kwai, it is well worth it.
