Good Value Hotel

by Beverley Rogers from Australia

Jan 7, 2011

I've been staying at this hotel for many years - I come to Bangkok every year. It's a pity the hotel doesn't attract more guests as it's very good value. The hotel is old but the rooms are spacious, clean with wi-fi connection. The staff are efficient but they need to be more friendly and welcoming to appeal to first time travelers. Also, a free internet service in the lobby would be a great attraction. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from a BTS sky train in a quieter part of Sukhumvit. A very good hotel for the price you pay

Great Location; Great Staff

by Bernard Jay Kullman from United States

Oct 14, 2010

This hotel is fantastic if you aren't concerned with the new / contemporary. MOst of the staff have worked here for over 10 years. At least one bell hop put his kids thru college working here. You could leave your money and passport on the bed and they wouldn't touch it except to make up the bed. The restaurant is a bit expensive if you order off the free breakfast menu is my only complaint. Over 2 american dollars for a coffee refill. The rooms are spotless in terms of the cleaning but the wall paper is old and a bit dingy. But I wouldn't want them to remodel as they would probably raise the price of the room. My only other complaint is that the air con is a bit inconsistent from room to room. And it is impossible to regulate the temp as it is central air. Other than that this is a great place for a great value. And the there is a pool which is very nice.

Old fashoned service and rooms

by Dave Perkes from Cambodia; Siem Reap

Jun 26, 2010

Ive been staying at the Rex for years and find it a friendly convenient place near the Skytrain. Service is formal and efficient with excellent communication from staff. Food is good enough value to choose to eat there. Rooms are old world;and a bit tired, so not for the style conscious.
The value is good and the swimming pool is a real bonus (you can wave to the passing Skytrains as they are only 20 metres from the poolside)

Great Location

by Jay from USA

Feb 14, 2010

Rex Hotel is old school. It is like 300 years old...no really it was built in, I am guessing, the 1950s. But it feels older. Some rooms are remodeled (i use that term loosely) and some are not. As with many Bangkok hotels the rooms without the carpet are nicer. The staff are very friendly and the internet special prices are more than reasonable for what you get (a rooftop pool). Only a few blocks from Soi 38 food court with some of the best street food in Bangkok. For 1st timers in Bangkok, this is not 18 blocks from the Rex at Soi 56...only a few blocks. Anyway the rooms are comfortable but the wall paper is old, dingy enough to really bother some people. As I said some rooms are worse (better) than others...cup half full or half empty? It is close enough but also far enough away from the Soi Cowboy / Nana entertainment districts. Like many hotels in Thailand, they do not care how many times you have stayed there or how many people you recommend. Don't expect special treatment upon returning to this place...they will not give you the internet deal that you had two weeks before. They could careless that they have empty rooms and that you have been a regular. Make sure you always book in advance and get the same deals that they have here on hotels2thailand. The walk in prices are too much. Also, taxi drives do not know this place even though it is on Suhkumvit.

An Oldie but a Goodie

by Dave Haig from Cumbria U.K.

Nov 10, 2009

I have stayed at the Rez hotel many times. The building is a little tired but this is more than compensated for by the very friendly staff, clean rooms, good pool and excellent value for money. I would never stay anywhere else now and neither would the friends I have introduced there. Skytrain station only short walk away and convenient for airport and Ekamai bus station.

Very helpful staff and a comfortable place to live

by Syed Mujtaba Haider Bilgrami from Pakistan

Jul 30, 2009

I think if they put some plants in the corridors and put some nice pictures or paintings on the wall of corridors + review lighting in corridors ans well as in rooms then it can become an excellent from v good hotel.
I would definitely like to visit there again for hollidays.

8.4

Excellent location with swimming pool

by Mark KIBBLER from Australia

Jul 10, 2009

Excellent value for money. The location is great - close to nightlife and skytrain. The staff are friendly and helpful. The main attraction for me was the swimming pool. The hotel is old (1950's) and could do with some work. The aircon in my room was not very efficient - it kept room cool enough for sleeping, but when it was time to get up and move around I soon got hot and sweaty.

Rex: Miserable Tight Fisted Receptionist

by stephen parkin from United Kingdom

Apr 24, 2009

Like: the history of the building, the retro furnishings and the location for work.
Dislikes: On 2 occasions during a one week stay I had disagreements with counter staff regarding paltry sums of money. First, they refused to honour me 4 baht for use of the internet (they would not accept 56 Baht for the 60 Baht charge - despite my offer to pay back when i returned from my room). Exactly the same happened regarding payment for a beer.... I was reduced to returning to my room for a mere 5 B - and made to look like a child. Why would they treat their customers in this manner - i'm hardly stealing off them and I find their attitude appalling. Not sure if i would stay there again on these bases.

Good location and quiet.

by Richard Jeffrey from United States

Mar 9, 2009

I have stayed at the Rex Hotel at least a dozen times. It is a bit outdated but the staff and service are consistently very good and helpful.I am an experienced traveler throoghout Thailand and the Rex Hotel is an excellent value. The BTS skytrain station at Thong Lor is about a 4-5 minute walk. A taxi to the Nana area will cost about 50-60 Baht or $1.50 US.

Has probably seen better times

by Christian Zurbrugg from Switzerland

Apr 20, 2008

Hotel has seen better times. Wallpaper dissolving and dirty. Some bugs in the room. Elevator does not feel very safe (and very very slow). Location ok, as away from the "action" of Sukhumvit but nevertheless on the skytrain route.

excellent hotel, excellent staff, loved my stay, will definately be back!

by ANUWAR HUSSAIN from United Kingdom

Nov 12, 2007

from the moment i set foot inside the hotel, the staff made me feel at ease and right at home. I have stayed in a lot of hotels ranging from 2 stars to five, and I must admit that the rex hotel is my favourite.

Beware of the prices for alcohol from the hotel restaurant, they are 3 times the price of the seven eleven across the road. Same goes with the food, not too bad, bit pricey as you would expect with a hotel, plenty of local thai restaurants on the hotel doorstep.

No cockroaches, no dirtiness, friendly staff, cheap rooms, all in all, my home in thailand is now the REX HOTEL.

9.6

Quiet location , not too far from skytrain

by Craig Thomas from Australia

I liked that the Rex was a clean place to stay , with room sizes quite ok and not to far from all good eateries and night time fun . The staff were pleasant enough and would certainly stay here again .

6.8

A Little Known Bargain

by Nicholas from Seattle, WA USA

Aug 4, 2007

I have stayed in lots of hotels in Bangkok and while each had its own special features, the Rex Hotel is maybe my favorite choice for the best compromise between features and price. If you are looking for a fancy newer hotel, the Rex is not what you are looking for. It is dated but clean and has a 24 hour cafe with room service. The staff here was wonderful, one of the friendliest and most helpful of any hotel in Bangkok that is in the less expensive category.

My wife and daughter are Thai and we have lots of family and friends in Bangkok. The Rex did not cop any attitude with us, neither treating my wife like a cheap woman or our Thai family and friends as an imposition. I love that more than anything about the Rex and will stay there again for that reason. The kids could stay with us or not and the Rex wasn´t chasing us around with a calulator to keep track of it.

The rooms here are nice size, get a deluxe room for still under $30 US that has plenty of space. Everything worked in the room and the one time we had an issue, it was resolved promptly. There is a swimming pool that is commonly vacant so you can have it all to yourself at times. It has a small parking lot in front which is great when you have someone coming to visit or for pick up-drop off, and taxis are common along Sukhumvit (major arterial). The skytrain is a little bit of a walk but not unreasonable except in a downpour! Thong Lo is the closest station. Even so, a taxi ride to the shopping district of Sukhumvit Soi 3 to Asoke is only about $1-2 US if you don´t want to walk.

The food in the A-Rex Cafe is good, the Thai food is better than the US-European choices. Also, you only get *one* breakfast each day with your room and you can´t accumulate them, which isn´t that important to me because I like to eat at the many different restuarants in the area anyway. Besides the room price is so good, who cares?!

The Rex isn´t close to things walking (except Soi Thong Lo) but is still centrally located and as I said before, the skytrain is close enough and Bangkok taxis are cheap. Save your money for shopping and entertainment and stay at the Rex! I will from now on. I loved it.

by Guenther Gloeckner from Vienna,Austria - Rayong,Thailand

Convenient location by BTS

by Jirapa Pungtrakul from Thailand

Jun 26, 2007

Very easy to go there because it´s very near to BTS.

7.2

Convenient location.

by Fong from Hong Kong

Jun 22, 2007

The location is convenient, just 5 minutes walk to Phong Lo BTS Station, and there are food stalls by the side of the station. From the new airport to the hotel by meter taxi, the fare is around 200 Baht.
I have booked a standard room, the room is big enough.
THe breakfast is simple but taste OK.
The adverse side are: the facilities are old, towels are clean but only bath towels are provided.
Overall: it is OK for such price.

OK if you want the Thong Lo skytrain area and great pool

by Kevin Corr from United States, Alaska

Jan 24, 2007

Not a good location for short time visitors wanting to sightsee but on the side of BKK airport. Really the pool makes it. Otherwise not so much to brag about. Food not bad. We got the web price from this site then left for a side trip and they wanted 300 baht/dy more because of the break in occupation. Main complaint is the air-con is either on or off with no temp control and is too cold so you have to wake up to thaw the room.

Simple Hotel which is nice on the whole

by Neo from Singapore

Dec 26, 2006

Rex Hotel´s prime advantage is its location - just few minutes from Thong Lor BTS. Meals at the stalls next to BTS were satisfying.
Rex´s rooms may look old, but everything else is still functional. I´m impressed with the selection of cable channels (more than 60 different ones!). Breakfast at Rexa Coffee is so-so, nothing much to commend or complain about.
Oh, if you just need basic internet usage, walk 2-3mins to the 24-hr cafe (with 3 PCs) located next to Caltex station on the way towards Thong Lor station - half the hotel internet usage rates - clean, neat & cool too.

Dec 20, 2006

I asked for a non-smoking room and got one with six ashtrays! Since I pointed out all dust along the walls and got it cleaned, I did not sneeze so much. The hotel needs to be re-decorated very soon.

by Fred from Essex UK

Stayed in about 12 different hotels on the Road, better than Nana Hotel etc, away from all the hustle, but using the Skytrain you are at Nana in 10mins, late night a taxi back around 50 Baht, just tell the driver to turn the meter on....

Budget Hotel - What did you expect?

by Jerry Ricks from Arizona, USA

Jul 7, 2006

The reception and cashier staff were very helpful. The worst part was the restaurant. Our room included a free breakfast. It consisted of 2 eggs, a slice of spam and juice. The staff were very unpleasant. The waitress was barely civil to me and downright rude to my wife. She literally threw the food down in front of my wife and walked away. NO LAND OF SMILE HERE!

The Rex Hotel is nothing special but a really good and comfortable choice to have a hotel in bangkok.
If you just want a normal room and everything alright go there. I has got the basics without unnecessary luxury that only boosts the price.
