Great location

This hotel is superbly located at a walking distance of Wat Pra Kheo and Wat Po and very close to Kao San Road, for those interested. It's one of the oldest hotels in Bangkok so you can't expect the same amenities as in a recent hotel but there's a swimming pool and that's very pleasant after a day's visit.

excellent location

It was the seventh time that we stayed in this hotel for a few days. If you can't book directly with the hotel itself, you always allocated a room in the old wing. The infrastructure and pool are very dated but the location of the hotel is great! The breakfast buffet is generous. Unfortunately, the friendliness of the reception desk, since the lead was left several years ago to the daughter, is below zero, absolutely unprofessional and very unfriendly. But the ideal location (just 250 meters from the Royal Palace and the Phraya River) is the reason why we book this hotel again instead of a hotel in the busy area of Khao San. After check-out, luggage can stay in deposit, but at a substantial fee each...

Why do people moan?

by Stephen Riches from United Kingdom

The Royal had some poor reviews from some tyravellers, so I was a little worried. OK, it's gone a bit dingy over the years, but nothing that could not be rectified by spending some basic money on sprucing it up. The pool surround is past its best, but the pool is good.
The room was excellent value and clean, the staff not at all surly as I'd read elsewhere - they were all polite and helpful. If you book here, bear in mind that it's more of a Thai hotel than a tourist one, so locals use it a lot; the facilities are booked for meetings, weddings etc., and the surrounding area has a nice local "buzz", but you will also find poverty-striken people sleeping rough on pavements outside too. I've used the place 5 times over 20 years, it may not have the sparkle it used to have, BUT I like it a lot and will return.
The "western" breakfast food is poor...toast is soggy and undercooked, fried eggs are hard and often cold, sausage and ham is tinned or pre-packed awful stuff BUT if you stick with the Thai-style breakfast you'll find it lovely.
There are plenty of taxi hasslers outside, and, I suspect a few over-painted ladies of the night occasionally inside, but they are all good natured and soon leave you alone. This is not the Sheraton and I wouldn't want it to be...here you are in touch with Thai life, in the Sheraton you are insulated and you pay 8 times the rate...I know, I stopped in both. I prefer the Royal. Also, the Royal has an excellent location for the Grand Palace, Wat Po, and all the famous backpackers haunts for food, massage, shopping and entertainment. Do NOT believe the bad reviews you read, but know what it is you are booking into. Steve Riches.

Swimming pool is great after a hot day

by Csabai, Ildiko from Hungary

The location was the best. We could go to lots of places on foot. Even the Chao Praya River boats are in walking distance and the whole town is available using that. Hundreds of cheap street food stalls around, a lot even in front of the hotel. It is not true that you can't cross the road. It is not that easy, but 2 minutes walk and there is a zebra both directions.
Our room had no noise and nicely renovated. The swimming pool is a real luxory in a hot afternoon. The breakfast is plentiful and quite wide selection. I liked it. It is true that painting at certain places would be necessary but for this price this hotel is excellent. The receptionists were helpful when we wanted to exchange money, they were the ones warning us to do it elswhere because of better rate. There is an information desk and the girl was very kind and explained everything we wanted to know. We used public transport everywhere.

Not close to a sky train station, so you need to get a tuk tuk everwwhere, but close to Wat Phra Kaew. If you book on the internet you get a room in the old wing, which are nicer than those in the new wing.

Convenient hotel

by Avner Vazana from Israel

Feb 13, 2009

Royal Hotel found to be a convenient hotel for our trip (team of 4). Located in the area we were looking for, clean, good breakfast, nice people, prices at the hotel are much more expensive than the internet (800Bhat /night). In general, we liked the Hotel very much and returned to stay there for more 3 nights at the end of the trip. Will recommend to my freinds.

Nice location for those who takes airport bus transportation. No subway or skyway nearby but Taxi is cheap around city. Not many decent shops around the corner but the famous Khao San Rd. is 5 minutes away. Clean and neat but swimming pool is small. The down side is mosquitoes in the room.

Very convenient location, close to Khao San Road but not in a noisy area. There is a bus stop over the road where you can take a bus to the international airport for only 33 Baht (much much cheaper than any taxi or hotel would charge you!)The receptionist told us which buses to catch, very helpful. Swimming pool a real bonus after spending the day exploring in the heat of the city. Breakfast was included in price of room and was very very good, with loads of choice and lovely fresh fruit everyday. Bathrooms were nice and clean. If you would like a balcony off you room then ask for a smoking room.

exelent hotel control your taxi drivers

by mohammed shakeel sarwar from United Kingdom

Apr 1, 2008

was impressd with this place, i´m in hotel trade myself so naturally going to compare. Only thing is that taxi driver allowed to ring my room to wake me when i´d given no such permission. if they´re working in the name of Royal hotel they shouldn´t take you through a load of streets and drop you acrooss the road. I went to kao san rd which is accross the road 2 mins on foot and was charged 50 baht a time until i figured it out.i had asked if its in walking distance and was lied to. I know its common for that to happen but its the hotel reputation that suffers.Apart from that good service good all round will be back.

Good location, but a worn down hotel

by E H from Oslo, Norway

Dec 5, 2006

The part of the hotel I stayed was very worn down (can not tell for the other part). The room was basic and not really worth the money compared to other deals you can get in Bangkok. Breakfast was very good, though, and the location is good.
