If you´re looking for a clean, quiet place to stay in Chiang Mai that is very inexpensive, the YMCA is the right place. It´s not very centrally located on the NW side of the city, but I enjoyed being based in a quiet neighborhood instead of tourist-central. You can easily get to the center of Chiang Mai with a 5 minute walk to the Central Shopping Plaza, where for 20 baht (50 cents) you can catch a songtao (red truck shared taxi). You will never wait longer than 10 seconds for a songtao to want your business. The rooms are comfortable, quiet and clean, but very simple. There´s a nice pool and I highly recommend shopping at the Y handicraft shop. All goods are made and sold by hilltribe artisans. The goods are sold on consignment, which guarantees the artisans get a fair price for their handicrafts (you can´t be sure of this at the night market). The restaurant in the Y has an extensive menu and the food is adequate.
