Cool place, awful beach
by Cathrine Christensen from Norway

We were disappointed by Coco Cottage's beach the second we arrived, and had to walk to shore from the speedboat when the tide was out.
Lucky for us, a couple of guys working at Coco's came out to the boat and carried our luggage to shore.
The beach isn't very nice you see, and you can't walk on the bottom. Rocks and dead coral cover the bottom, at least at the beach by Coco's. We've been to many other beaches in Thailand, but the one in Koh Ngai is the worst we've seen (at least of the ones that claims to be "beautiful and perfect tropical beach". Maybe others will disagree, but for me the perfect beach has a velvet sandy bottom. When the tide is high, the beach disappeares, and the water goes all the way up tp the wooden wall that Coco has built. So there's either no beach, or ugly beach.
We walked further up the beach a couple of times, and all though not our idea of perfect, it's better by the Mayalay and Thapwarin resort.
This overshadowed our joy for the hotel itself, because it's actually really beautiful. The restaurant, garden and area is really beautiful, with all natural materials.
The bungalows are all the same, the most expencive ones is at the beachfront and has air-con (air-con is worth the extra money!) The bathroom is made of concrete, has a wooden sink, and has no roof, and this is really cool and charming. Except I never actually felt really clean. But who cares when you're on a wildlife experience in your bathroom. We were just happy that the toilets were nice and modern. The bungalows are a bit expencive, we lived in more comfy bungalows for half the price in other islands.
The restaurant is really cool, and has good food. The staff is ok, all though we felt that they were staring and talking about us, and other guests (in thai of course, so who knows.)
All in all, a cool and laid back place, with a great scenery. But with a horrible beach!

We could relax. The beach in front of the hotel is beautiful.
